Green Card Voices is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to share the personal stories of immigrants across the United States. They hope to help create unity and foster a greater understanding of the people who choose to make America their home. Each story is important and a beautiful opportunity to focus on the cultural diversity of our country.
Green Card Youth Voices seeks to tell the stories of high school students. These brave young people have come to America with their families to overcome the challenges and hardships they faced in their native countries. We gain insight into what life was like for them growing up, what their families have endured, and how life has changed for them since coming to America.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to help share these stories. I read and listened to the stories of two individual students that had already been recorded by Green Card Voices. I then composed a summary of their experiences and hopes for the future. Lastly, I collaborated within a small group to edit the summarized bios for submission to Green Card Voices. These miniature biographies will be featured on banners in the traveling exhibit that highlights the students from Madison and Milwaukee.
The full biographies are collected in a print book. You can also witness the students and others telling their stories first-hand through the collection of videos on the Green Card Voices website.
